Tuesday night I gave a 90 minute presentation entitled Everyday Leadership, Everyday Courage to a group of young (early 20s) people enrolled in a Global Leadership program.
This was my first paid motivational/inspirational speech.
I received $100 cash + a $25 gift card + a box of chocolates.
So far, motivational speaking is turning out to be far more lucrative than stand up comedy, where I earned a total of $75 and 4 drink tickets over my entire career.
And I’ve already done better in both of these careers than I did in real estate. (And if you want to hear the whole real estate story…you can watch the video I embedded in this post.)
Right. The video.
Ugh. Watching myself on video. Seeing every flaw and mistake. Listening to my awful voice.
Turns out…
It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.
I didn’t even cringe much while watching it.
Apparently, I’ve arrived at a whole new level of self-acceptance.
Yes, those are pajamas. The pattern features blue stars and little green sheep.
I’m going to hit the dreaded “Publish” button before I start listing everything that is wrong with my presentation and making excuses for why it isn’t better. It is what it is.
Instead…
Yay me for posting it.
Yay me for making a YouTube channel.
Yay me for finally taking a giant step toward my mission – the one I’ve been putting off for only…oh, 17 years or so.

Yay you indeed! And really, I wouldn’t say that the bit I saw was “not bad”, I’d say it was pretty good! This first paid inspirational speech won’t be the last, for sure.
So great to see you on camera again Patty. It is always so refreshing to hear you speak. You make the uncomfortable so comfortable.
Brilliant! I’m so proud of you, GB! Not for the job you did speaking – I always knew you were fantastic at that – but for the guts in posting your skills for all to admire. You’re getting stronger by the post!!
Thanks for the support guys… *mwah*
Ms. Patty K!
You have my attention and you make me smile. Footed PJ’s are my personal preference. I’ve not thought of wearing them for public speaking. Thank you for being a trailblazer for pajama enthusiasts. Dress codes could be expanded to include PJ’s. Wouldn’t that be wonderful?
